Career development: Building a virtuous circle

Posted on September 12, 2025September 17, 2025 by .

I’m currently at the NICE Academy in Malta. As ever it has been a privilege to be in Malta, even if it is a little weird being here without Ronald Sultana who was previously always my mentor and guide around the island.

NICE is an open network of higher education institution and individuals engaged in the academic training of career practitioners. The network draws together individuals from more than 40 countries across Europe.

The conference in Malta is focused on Career guidance for sustainable futures. I was asked to keynote the conference and talk about how career development can be part of ‘building a virtuous circle’ in society.

I used this metaphor of ‘the virtuous circle’ to to talk about is the social and economic contribution that career guidance can make. I sought to make a distinction between the capacity of career guidance to satisfy policy maker’s desires for economic growth and a broader conception of what career guidance can contribute to the wider social good. Inevitably this opened up the possibility of talking about social justice and the need for environmental sustainability, decent work and human flourishing.

This is what I had to say…

As ever, you are welcome to use these slides as you see fit and to follow up on the references that I provide at the end.
