The climate emergency is here: It’s time for green guidance

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of keynoting the 50th anniversary conference of the Swedish Guidance Association (Sveriges Vägledarförening). It was an amazing event, and I had the opportunity to hear a lot of different contributions from leading lights in the field from Sweden and the rest of Europe.

I was asked to talk about green guidance, so I took the opportunity to present the draft handbook from the Exploring Green Guidance project. The handbook isn’t fully available yet, but we are now close enough to publication to start making use of it. In my presentation I went through the thinking and main structure behind the handbook.

In general people were pretty responsive to the idea that guidance should play a role in the climate crisis. A number of people came up to me and said that they didn’t agree with everything that I’d said, but that they were open to this sort of challenge. I found this a pretty positive response. I know that green guidance does throw some fundamental challenges to many of the ways that we have thought about the role of career guidance, but it is good to get people thinking and talking.

This is what I presented…
